How many of us are just acting our way through life, adapting to different settings like chameleons? Situational elasticity lends its hand to the collaborative truth, that people inject each other with signaling serum. The slightest twang, the tinkle of dimples, the cleanest tucked-in shirt, belt, and Prada shoes – we try to demonstrate to others ‘this is who I am and this what I do.’ #philosophy #life #selfexpression #art
The challenge in making life feel new again is figuring how we can copy and combine the observations and artifacts we collect into something that feels original. We should lean more into our guidance—everyone knows what they need to do, as long as they are willing to embrace the pain. READ MORE > #life #motivation #philosophy

The pen, a camera, a blog—all our passports to freedom. They are tools for noticing, interpretation, and creative expression. They digest the world only to spit it back out, after a few edits. #internet #education #future #creativity

Creativity

Start before you’re ready. If you wait until everything is perfect, you won’t get the feedback that makes your work better. As Seth Godin writes, “habits are more important than fears.” Sharing and shipping your art alleviates doubt and strengthens the doing muscle. #work #motivation #entrepreneurship
People don’t like thinking. It’s painful. Just as numbering denotes page numbers, we have to get our brain cells to assemble in an attempt to establish some order. There’s a reason why there are so few philosophers and so many people attending entertainments. Consumption is our default setting. #thinking #life #arts #creativity #advice
As the Japanese artist Hokusai said: “Until the age of 70, nothing I drew was worthy of notice. At 110, every dot and every stroke will be as though alive.” Hokusai

As a cryptozoologist, Krantz believed that Bigfoot might exist and did everything he could to research it. Five of his ten books explored the possible existence of the ape-like creature. #bigfoot #nature #animals #myths #tech
When Starkweather first proposed the idea of a laser printer to his boss at Xerox, they shut his idea down. But curious and determined, Starkweather persisted because he was convinced of the possibility of making precise copies. LEARN MORE > #history #tech #printers #Xerox #technology
A medium is any messaging mechanism that connects people together to help facilitate communication. The medium is the fulcrum for storytelling including all its characteristics. Marshall McLuhan coined the phrase, “The medium is the message.” #gif #tech #instagram

This dual-mounted listening device served as an aircraft detection device before the invention of radar in 1935. The Dutch military used the elephant-looking ears to detect approaching enemy aircraft by listening afar for engine sounds. There were various iterations of the acoustic locators. The Germans created a dual sight and sound system in 1917 that combined sound-ranging capabilities with binoculars to scope out aircraft.

Memory creation
Memory is reconstruction. We capture an image in our mind’s eye and recreate it with the code in our brain when it needs recalling.

Can't stop thinking
The actor slips over their words; the violinist freezes mid-song; the shortstop misses an easy grounder. Mistakes happen, no matter the expert. But how many errors are due to overthinking?

We worry as a preventative, living through hyperbole in our heads before experiencing any such horror in real life.

How to stay determined
When we overcompensate for our vulnerabilities, we harden our determination. “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how,” wrote Nietzsche in the Twilight of the Idols.

What spreads, rarely sticks
Thinking, doing, and building all require a form of starting and maintenance to ensure longevity. ‘Build it, and they will come’ is, therefore, a canard. A product’s existence depends on the strength of usability, marketing, and overall spreadability.

Beyond ridiculous — that’s the point. Have the courage to deserve it. More than apparition is a hail mary come true. Whatever musters both desire and fear, do that!

Creativity is like breathing
A friend once told me that creativity is like breathing. When you make stuff, you’re exhaling. But you can’t exhale forever. Eventually, you have to breathe in. Or you’ll be dead. Matthew Inman, Cartoonist

The imagination bleeds into the world. What we see comes into line with how we want to see it. Everything is practice, a melding together, as one experience, one question, and trial and error lead to the next.
There’s always friction to create stuff that matters, at least to you, versus creating stuff that maintains someone else’s bottom line.
