Nine-banded armadillo pups. Approximately 20 species of armadillo exist, but the nine-banded is the only one found in the United States. The term “armadillo” means “little armored one,” and refers to the presence of bony, armor-like plates covering.
The 9 banded Armadillo is not native to Florida. They have bony plates (actually made of bone) that cover its legs, head and body (everything except the ears & belly). They have nine, flexible bands across the midsection, which allows it to be relatively nimble. They range in color from brownish-black to gray. The ears are very long & its snout is long and pig-like. It has short, stout legs with sharp, curved claws used for digging. They have peg-like teeth in the back (no front teeth).
