A hit on the shelter in Durning Road LIVERPOOL was the worst incident in the Blitz during the heaviest air raid to date, 29 November 1940, a parachute mine hit the Instruction Centre collapsing into the shelter crushing 300. Boiling water and gas from fractured mains poured in.fires overhead made rescue work extremely dangerous.166 men women and children were killed. Many more badly injured. 25 Dec 41: Not a merry day in Leningrad. Despite increased supplies from the outside, 3,700 Russians in the besieged city starve to death, bringing the total for the month to 52,000. The city will go on to be the most devastated modern city in world history. The destruction and human losses in Leningrad exceeded those of the Battle of Stalingrad, the Battle of Moscow and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. #WWII #History

The guards at Nazi prisoner-of-war camps were accustomed to looking for tunnels -- so they never thought to look in the attic at Colditz Castle, where, astonishingly, British prisoners had constructed a 19-foot glider from scavenged materials.
