Three factors influence autumn leaf color : leaf pigments, day length, & weather. The timing of color changes & the onset of falling leaves happens as nights become longer, causing leaves to stop producing chlorophyll. A late spring or severe summer drought can delay fall color by a few weeks. A warm period during fall will also lower the intensity of autumn colors. A warm wet spring, favorable summer weather, & warm sunny fall days with cool nights should produce the most brilliant colors. Every spring & fall billions of birds fly thousands of miles to reach their breeding & wintering grounds, yet some of the most basic details of these astonishing avian pilgrimages remain murky. A new genus of butterfly, with dark, eye-like spots on its distinctive orange wings, has been named after Sauron, the arch-villain of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy epic “The Lord of the Rings.” The Saurona butterflies are part of a group called Euptychiina. Found in the southwestern Amazon rainforest, two species have been identified in the new genus — Saurona triangula & Saurona aurigera — but there are most likely more. #entomology #lepidopterology Monarch Butterfly, Fellowship Of The Ring, Lord Of The Rings, Unusual Names, Climate Change Effects, Amazon Rainforest, Dark Lord
