Painted Lead Soldiers. ca. 1948. In the early 20th century, inexpensive toy soldiers, were in great demand. Lead was cheap and easy to mold and paint. By 1966, however, fears of lead poisoning inspired laws that banned the manufacture of these popular soldiers and all toys containing lead.
