Of the four monuments that adorn the perimeter of the grand Naghshe Jahan Square, within the city once referred to as “half of the world”, none comes close to the magnificence and detailed designs of Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque. Completed in 1619 by the legendary architect Shaykh Bahai, who was also behind much of the urban planning and design of Safavid-era public projects, the mosque features exquisite tile-work and enchanting ceilings that were made exclusively for the haram of the Shah.
