We asked secondary teachers: “What are the phrases in student writing that make you cringe, wail, and gnash your teeth?” From hundreds of responses, we narrowed it down to a carefully chosen list of Outlawed Words and Phrases. Here are 3 great ways to use it: 1) as an Editing Guide 2) as an “Outlawed Phrases” Bulletin Board, and 3) as a Flip It! activity (e.g. Share the poster with students and challenge them to create their own list of 11 rules for writing powerful essays.).
