1700-1750 Swiss Box iron- The box iron was one of two common styles of iron used in the 18th century. A piece of metal was heated in the fire, then placed inside the hollow of the iron, at which point it was used. This meant that the iron itself would not come into contact with the soot and dirt from the hearth in the process, leading to a much cleaner result. Also, the box iron made use of indirect heat, which was less likely to scorch the fabric.
