Ethiopian opals are sometimes referred to as the living stone. They are more porous than their Australian opal cousins. When submerged in water, they will temporary become translucent with only the opal flash remaining. As the opal dries, the normal color will return. Due to this nature, this opal should not be worn in chlorine or salt water. Avoid lotions and oils as well, those could get stuck inside the pores and damage the stone.
