From an article in the US photo magazine "LIFE", circa 1937. The Promenade Deck of Imperial Airways new Short S.23 Empire (or: 'C-') Class flying boats, looking forward. Note the handrail immediately below the large 'landscape' oriented observation windows on the port side. The Empire 'boats used to fly low - often no more than a few hundred or a thousand feet - so that the scenery could be viewed by the passengers. Over Africa, the aircraft would often startle the game below.
