PUTORANA PLATEAU, Russia: is a high-lying basalt area at the edge of Central Siberia. The massive eruptive event which formed this region continued for a million years until about 250 million years ago. The area contains some of the largest known nickel deposits in the world. Russia's geographical center is on the plateau, as is the Talnikovy Waterfall, touted as the highest waterfall in Asia. The 25,000 large lakes form whole ecosystems. The Putorana Nature Reserve was established in 1988.
