George William Buchanan (1854–1924) British diplomat, son of British Ambassador Sir Andrew Buchanan. In 1910 Buchanan was appointed as the British Ambassador to Russia. He kept abreast of the political developments in Russia & met some of the leading liberal reformists in the country. It has been suggested that this was secretly encouraged by the then Liberal government in London. His study of old masters in the Hermitage collection persuaded him to abandon commerce for art, and in 1853 he returned to London and enrolled at the Royal Academy schools. Member of the St John's Wood Clique of historical genre painters & Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy.
