The Waffen-SS Legion "Latvija" march through Riga in celebration of Latvian Independence Day, 1943. Upon its founding in 1943, the Latvian Legion witnessed an astounding 87,550 volunteers, following what was known as the "Year of Terror" (1940-41); Latvia's occupation by the USSR. Stalin terrorized the nation, ordering many thousands of Latvians to be shipped to death camps. Today, annual celebrations are held in Riga to honor the Latvian SS and their fight for freedom against Soviet tyranny.
