1783 Marie Antoinette holding a rose by Élisabeth-Louise Vigée-Lebrun (Versailles) This 1783 Vigée-Le Brun work may be the most well-known portrait of Marie-Antoinette. It was quickly painted in an attempt to calm the controversy caused by the "muslin portrait." Vigée-Lebrun painted many copies. Elements of the "muslin portrait" are retained - she wears a hat and holds a rose while wearing a bertha with two flounces and a skirt with two flounces.

The Empress Dowager Cixi: was a powerful and charismatic woman who unofficially but effectively controlled the Manchu Qing Dynasty in China for 47 years, from 1861 to her death in 1908. Was a Concubine who worked her way to Empress. Cunning and cut throat, I have a weird obsession with her. Her ruthlessness is interesting to study.

Empress Dowager Cixi born: died: was probably most powerful woman in China since Empress Wu Zetian of the seventh century Zhou Dynasty. In fact, Cixi may have been even more powerful than Wu Zetian.

Neferuptah's name was enclosed in a cartouche and she had her own pyramid at Hawara. Neferuptah died at an early age however.

1903 portrait of TR by John Singer Sargent. You get a sense of his vitality, of his having paused to speak with you, as if you interrupted him on his way to other matters. I love that he's imposing and undaunted, everything invested in his form, but the background looks less finished, less saturated.
