Lyndon B. Johnson was the initiator of the military draft, which was forced military service. Americans had trouble in Vietnam due to this because of the inadequate men having to go fight out of the country in harsh conditions. American troops increased to over 500,000 during the Johnson presidency, however, thankfully, decreased back to normal during Nixon's presidency.
