Hindenburg's first landing at Lakehurst 1936. According to a documentary I viewed today the Hindenburg had made 10 previous trans-Atlantic trips to the US Lakehurst Field prior to its tragic demise. This pic I think gives the viewer a great perspective on its size - huge-o-mungous! This image is in the public domain. Neat pic!

The Vickers Transoceanic Airship project was a planned airship series in the 1930s to design and mass produce giant 800 ft. rigid airships, or Zeppelins. These planned ships would have space for over 70 passengers and would include a deck on the top of the ship for sightseeing. The ripple effect of the Hindenburg disaster along with Vickers having money issues ultimately halted production.

USS Macon had a structured duraluminum hull with three interior keels. The airship was kept aloft by 12 helium-filled gas cells made from gelatin-latex fabric. Inside the hull, the ship had eight German-made Maybach, 12-cylinder, 560 hp (418 kW) gasoline-powered engines that drove outside propellers. This photo shows the tail of the USS Macon under construction, 1933.
