Chapter 9 - Jokes The Joker "should be classed as a kind of minor mystic" because he is one of those people "who pass beyond the bounds of reason and society and give glimpses of a truth which escapes through the mesh of structured concepts" (Mukerji and Schudson, 1991, pg. 306). A joke implies that anything may be possible and it corresponds to the form of the "social experience" (pg. 299). In popular culture an awareness of reality is perhaps altogether a joke.
