German soldier, Battle of Verdun, 1916. Here we see a man wearing a gas mask and holding a Model 24 grenade. Its long stem allowed it to be thrown easier in arches to get into enemy trenches. Although gas weapons were banned prior to WWI by all participating powers Germany would use a loophole by not sending them via projectile but just opening them as canisters and letting the breeze guide the agent into the enemy trench.
