Stories of the Roc can be traced back to the Greek Historian Herodotus (484–424 bce), who was told by Egyptian priests of birds so huge they could carry a person. The story recounted in the Arabian Nights first appeared in the Jatakas of India, a great compendium of folktales dating from the 4th century bce. However, the great bird is not named as a Roc. Crusaders brought the story back to Europe in the Middle Ages, Marco Polo described the Roc in some detail.
