Trousers (lozim), held in place with a belt, were essential under kurtas. Wide at the waist and hips and tight at the ankles, with a decorative trim around the cuffs, they were made from two different fabrics for reasons of thrift as well as aesthetics. Plain white cotton, which was believed to have magical power to bestow fertility and happiness, was used for the upper part, with patterned silk for the lower part of the trouser legs that showed below kurta.

Atlas ikat: although floral motifs may indicate Persian influences, and geometric patterns often reflect nomadic and pre-Islamic designs, it is difficult to distinguish Tajik from Uzbek embroidery, as these two different ethnic groups have adjusted to living side by side and their arts have entwined.
