The enemy of your enemy is your friend. Which is why the western Christians loved the mongols for attacking Islam. They weren't to worried when the mongols were on their doorstep in Hungary. But when Ogedei died the mongols never returned to Europe. Hulegu however went into Mesopotamia and would of marched into North Africa if the Mamluks didn't stop him. They destroyed Baghdad though and without central authority Islam crumbled.
