It’s a bit smelly but it’s good for the clay as the microbes eat and well, defecate the material, lowering the acidity of the stoneware and making it more plastic and easier to throw with, or at least that’s the idea. It’s for that reason when clay becomes short, which is the term we use to describe clay that’s weak and cracks easily, it’s normally mixed up, set aside and aged. This way it slowly becomes usable again.  In this video though, I’m mixing old clay with new clay, that’s normally enough to rejuvenate it, especially in this instance as I’m adding a coarsely grogged body, (grog adds strength), so this stuff should be lovely to throw with. He said the pressure from the water in the bucket forces the water in the bag into the clay. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I was skeptical but it totally worked.
