On the second stage of his journey, LIFE photographer Jack Birns set foot in France. The Channel ferry from Folkestone moored at the quay of Calais Maritime, where the through-carriages to the Balkans were waiting. In the evening the train reached Paris, where Jack Birns photographed Gare de Lyon.

In 1930 the Taurus Express was introduced as an extension to the Simplon Orient Express. In Syria connections were provided to Iraq, Palestine and Egypt.

In 1950 the American photographer Jack Birns traveled the Simplon Orient Express from London to Istanbul for LIFE magazine. In upcoming issues, retours will be traveling after him. The journey started in London, Victoria Station as the gateway to the continent.
