Saint of the Day – 27 February – St Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows CP (1838-1862) Passionist Religious and student preparing for the Priesthood. Born as Francisco Giuseppe Vincenzo Possenti on 1 March 1838 at Assisi, Italy and died on 27 February 1862, just before his 24th birthday, at Abruzzi, Italy of tuberculosis. Gabriel was known for his great devotion to the Sorrows of the Virgin Mary.

St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother. February 27th is the Feast of St. Gabriel Possenti, or St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. He is a Passionist Saint who had a desire to let the whole world know about the Passion of Our Lord and was also devoted to Our Lady of Sorrows. Who in the entire world has known the pain of Our Lady as she watched her Son die on the Cross? St. Gemma Galgani had a great devotion to St. Gabriel and he appeared to her.

Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows was successful in his effort to be faithful in little things. His spirit of prayer, love for the poor, consideration of the feelings of others, exact observance of the Passionist Rule as well as his bodily penances—always subject to the will of his wise superiors— made a deep impression on everyone. His superiors had great expectations of Gabriel as he prepared for the priesthood, but after only four years of religious life symptoms of tuberculosis…
