Madonna and Child by Gherardo Starnina, circa 1360-1413. Against a very ornate gold background and placed in an arch are the Madonna and Child. They both have decorative gold halos. The Christ Child makes the sign of a blessing with his fingers. The Madonna is dressed in red with a dark blue cloak and wears a jewel-encrusted crown in the Valencian style.

Gherardo Starnina was a very important painter in Florence during his lifetime, but unfortunately we know very little about him. We do know that he spent time in Toledo and Valencia, Spain, involved in fresco and panel painting and was influenced by the Late Gothic style he witnessed there. This experience may have given his work its harmonious elegance. This Madonna’s crown has a Valencian style no doubt also inspired by his Spanish sojourn.
