Lime Mortar is used in traditional solid wall buildings to allow moisture to escape. Cement mortars are not used in these old buildings because they trap moisture in the wall which leads to decay and spalled bricks.

Limewash is probably the earliest form of paint – basically a mixture of slaked lime and water. Limewash is used as a finish for harling & render, & internally. Locally derived natural earth pigments were traditionally added to a limewash providing a wide range of ‘regional’ colours. When correctly applied it is a durable material. Limewash can be made up on site from lime putty or weak hydraulic lime, or alternatively can be purchased ready made and coloured from specialist suppliers.
