Laika space dog

Laika was a Soviet space dog who became the first animal to orbit the Earth. A stray dog from the streets of Moscow, she was selected to be the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 that was launched into outer space on November 3, 1957.

A street dog named Laika became the lop-eared icon of the Soviet space program when she was blasted into orbit in 1957. Sixty years on we look at the handful of images that remain of the little dog that helped pave the way to space.

In the late 1940’s both Soviets and Americans began investigating the expanse of space by sending animals up, up and away. It began with fruit flies in 1947, grew to include monkeys in 1949 and mice in 1950, but no animal actually entered orbit until November 3rd, 1957, when Laika, a Soviet trained street dog, made history.
