Jacob kramer

Jacob Kramer is a Jewish artist who migrated with his family to Leeds to escape the Russian pogroms when Kramer was only eight. This portrait oil painting was painted when Kramer was thirty, in 1922, shortly after his return to Leeds from living in London. It is a head and shoulders portrait of a gentleman with dark hair, gazing to his right, his identity unknown. William Roberts (1895-1980), Sarah, oil/canvas, c.1925. Painted in the early years of their marriage this portrait of the artist’s wife conveys her strength of character. Sarah Kramer was born to a traditional Jewish family in Leeds in 1900. She modeled for her brother, the artist Jacob Kramer, and through him met William Roberts. They married in 1922. Roberts painted her portrait many times over the next 50 years and she often posed for figures in his compositions.

“'Portrait of Nellie Pickering.' Born in the Ukraine, Jacob Kramer came to England in 1900, settling in the Jewish colony in Leeds. He studied at Leeds School of Art, then the Slade where he met David Bomberg, Isaac Rosenberg and Mark Gertler.”
