Discover why some theropod dinosaurs were more stylish than others. Explore the evolutionary significance of their head adornments. This image showcases three different types of dinosaurs.

Most humongous theropod dinosaurs sported horns, bony crests, or knobs atop their heads, but the little ones weren't so fashionable, say paleontologists. And that pattern could have evolutionary significance.

Acrocanthosaurus (/ˌækroʊˌkænθəˈsɔːrəs/ ak-ro-kan-thə-sawr-əs; meaning "high-spined lizard") is a genus of theropod dinosaur that existed in what is now North America during the Aptian and early Albian stages of the Early Cretaceous. Like most dinosaur genera, Acrocanthosaurus contains only a single species, A. atokensis. Its fossil remains are found mainly in the U.S. states of Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming, although teeth attributed to Acrocanthosaurus have been found as far east as Maryland.

Nov 21, 2024 - Here is an Acrocanthosaurus sketch study I've worked on n off for a little bit now. The more I look at its skeleton, the more I imagine a Dinosaur made to do strenuous things, with the big muscle attachment points, stout legs and a beautifully designed skull are made to move its massive girth around to take on the tougher prey in its environment. Although we know very little of its actual ecosystem, what we know consisted of giant Sauropods, armored Nodosaurs rivaling the Ankylosaurs in intimidation with their massive spikes, and of course other Acrocanthosaurs. I would imagine a team of them wrestling a giant Sauropod down to its knees while others went for the attack. Might make a cool drawing....Who knows? **Unless stated otherwise, most of what I do is for the fun of speculation**
