four different colored portraits of people with glasses

6th Graders did a really nice job on this project. We started off by learning a lot about the artist Roy Lichtenstein. We watched this video and read through this handout. As much as I hated to, I

Step 1. Put a visual dot in the center. Step 2. Draw 4 arms from the center either off the page at the sides or at the corners. As the arms go out they should spread apart from each other or get wider as they go out. Step 3. Write your name in capital letters inside the arms. Always start at the dot and work out. Make sure the letters of your name touch the top and the bottom of each line. The letters will get bigger as they go out. Keep writing the letters of your name until you are out of…

Inspired by pinterest... I took photos of the children a few days before starting the lesson. Use a white background when taking the profile photo. Use photo shop to create the silhouette or other photo editing software. I had the silhouettes printed on large 11x17 paper at my office. The day we started the lesson we talked about the elements of art, line, shape, form, value, space and some principles such as pattern and rhythm with the use of a power point. To finish the class, I had…

an art project is being displayed on the table in front of other artwork work, including owls

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to have 2 bonus class periods with my 6th graders while my current middle school group (8th grade) was in Washington, D.C. for the annual 7th/8th grade travel week. Because I hadn't had my 6's in a couple of months, and I only had a little over 1 hour of usable art making time with them, I knew I needed a project that would get them excited and keep them on task so that we would have finished pieces of art at the end of our time together. I decided that…

the wall is decorated with many different colored paper cutouts and people holding hands together

Howdy! I am Mr. Greg from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. My real name is Greg Smedley-Warren. I have been teaching for 11 years. I spent a year teaching fifth grade, two years in second grade and am now in my 9th year in Kindergarten. Kindergarten is my passion and my calling but honestly, that wasn’t how it started. When I was moved to Kindergarten (not voluntarily!) I called my mommy and cried. But on the first day, I fell in love and knew that Kindergarten is where I belonged. I have…

some kids are making art with sand and paper

(Original Pin) I pinned this website because I was captivated by a 5th and 6th grade art project for creating sand art. It allows students to have artistic freedom when creating their sand art designs and they get to work with many different types of art materials they have likely never before used. I appreciate that the teacher that shared this lesson posted several pictures of the sand art creation process as well as suggestions for ensuring the project goes smoothly.
