This fantastic new book from highly respected quilter and author Carolyn Forster gives you nine beautiful Layer Cake (pre-cut 10-inch square) quilt designs, made using a variety of patchworking and quilting styles. Also included are nine accompanying ‘gift’ projects, which range from bags and pincushions to needlebooks and coasters although you may find them just too good to give away! All the techniques you need are clearly explained at the beginning of the book with easy-to-follow…

This is one of my favorite scrap quilt patterns lately...I have another quilt top just like this one I need to finish. The squares are cut 2.5 x 4.5 inches, so my scrap bin had much to contribute to this quilt. Nothing makes me happier than using up scraps. I think this pattern appeals to me because it is random, but somewhat organized scrappy. I was inspired by this quilt I found on Pinterest several years ago, but there are many tutorials out there similar to it. For the binding I used up…

Last November I had the opportunity to speak to the St. Cloud Heritage Quilters. A woman named Jean Gilbertson brought this amazing quilt for show and tell that literally made my jaw drop...in the best way possible, of course! If I recall correctly, this is at least a queen size quilt. It was truly stunning. Each of the 4 patches finish around 2", so each individual square finishes at about an inch, I believe. I was foolish and asked the only question that came to mind, which was: "how long…

For new quilters, getting started can be overwhelming! I remember shopping for fabric for my first quilt — I had no idea that there were fabric shops other than Joann's. I ended up buying a layer cake and using a tutorial on the Moda Bake Shop to make my first project. That project was far from perfect, but it was made

My self-imposed ban on blog reading and posting is over as Lent ends tonight. I was only posting finishes on my blog, since this is my way of keeping track of what I've done and, more importantly, when. I missed reading about everyone's quilting adventures, but it was good for me to stop for a bit. As with most of us, the mask making continues. In between making masks, I worked on this scrappy quilt using 2 1/2" squares. As those who follow me know, I do not enjoy making scrappy quilts and…

My Scrappy Sunshine quilt is about a quarter there. I’m randomly piecing it using ‘magic numbers.’ I often teach in my improvisational classes about using magic numbers for construction. Magic numbers can make improvisational quilt construction that seems impossible a little more within reach. I had a lot of inquiries so I thought I would...Read More »

I have had a lot of people asking me how I am keeping my scraps under control. They know I'm not big on having LOTS of scraps around. I have a small home and studio space so I have to work very smart. I can't keep lots of bins of scraps.. and honstly i don't want to. I love NEW FABRIC... so my scraps are little treasures.. but treasures that need to be USED. First I do not keep tons of scraps. I enjoy what Joan Ford told me, she only keeps so much then she makes quilts with it....
