Aurelian was the 44th emperor in 270-275. During his reign, he suppressed numerous revolts and would-be usurpers. He defeated the Alamanni after a devastating war, as well as invasions from such tribes as the Goths and Vandals. Aurelian restored the Empire's eastern provinces after his conquest of the Palmyrene Empire and conquered the Gallic Empire in the west, reuniting the Empire. The Roman Senate declared him "Restitutor Orbis," Restorer of the World. Nonetheless, he was assassinated.
