ROYAL PALACES OF ABOMEY: functioned between 1695-1900, as the cultural hub of the Dahomey Kingdom. Dahomey was founded by the Fon people as a military & commercial empire. It grew to dominate the trade in enslaved workers with Europeans as part of the so-called "Slave Coast" until the late 19th century. Dahomey sold kidnap victims whom they had attacked in war. At their peak, the palaces of Dahomey could accommodate up to 8000 people.
