Pompeii with Mt. Vesuvius (the volcano) in the background. Went here with my host family when I was a foreign exchange student living in Germany. This place is incredible. You can see the people "frozen in time" by the volcanic ash that engulfed the city when Mt. Vesuvius erupted and covered Pompeii, destroying the city and preserving its remains for the future.

Herculaneum, Pompeii sister city, also buried in the eruption. Was hermetically sealed by the ash and lava so many items such as bone and wood were preserved, which was not the case with Pompeii. However, there is a modern city above herculaneum, so only about 25% has been excavated.
