Nautiluses are the sole living cephalopods whose bony body structure is externalized as a shell. The animal can withdraw completely into its shell and close the opening with a leathery hood formed from two specially folded tentacles.
The chambered nautilus lives in tropical waters extending from the Andaman Sea east to Fiji and from southern Japan to the Great Barrier Reef. This animal usually lives where the slopes of coral reefs descend into deep waters.
Nice that shells are used in the lamps. Kind of brings the sea indoors. I wonder if we could use that thematically in the apartment. walzerjahrhundert: Gustav Gurschner, Art Nouveau bronze mermaid lamp with nautilus shell shade, circa 1899
