Inside the Cupola, NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy, an Expedition 36 flight engineer, uses a 400mm lens on a digital still camera to photograph a target of opportunity on Earth some 250 miles below him and the International Space Station. Cassidy has been aboard the orbital outpost since late March and will continue his stay into September.

NASA's Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has unveiled a previously unseen structure centered in the Milky Way. The feature spans 50,000 light-years (roughly half of the Milky Way’s diameter) and may be the remnant of an eruption from a supersized black hole at the center of our galaxy. The structure spans more than half of the visible sky, from the constellation Virgo to the constellation Grus, and it may be millions of years old.

The hemispheric view of Venus, as revealed by more than a decade of radar investigations culminating in the Magellan mission, is centered at 270 degrees east longitude. Colors represent different elevations.

City Lights Illuminate the Nile NASA image acquired October 13, 2012 The Nile River Valley and Delta comprise less than 5 percent of Egypt’s land area, but provide a home to roughly 97 percent of the country’s population. Nothing makes the location of human population clearer than the lights illuminating the valley and delta at night.

The nighttime view was made possible by the new satellite's day-night band of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite. Nighttime light is the most interesting data that I've had a chance to work with, says Chris Elvidge, who leads the Earth Observation Group at NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center. I'm always amazed at what city light images show us about human activity. Photo credit: NASA Observatory
