May is Mental Health Month, it was started 67 years ago to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of good mental health for everyone.  One of the biggest hurdles for anyone suffering from mental illness is overcoming the stigma.  It is the number one reason why two-thirds of those living with a mental illness do not seek help. Break the stigma.  Expressions like “You’ll get over it” and “Just relax” can minimize how a person is feeling. Instead offer your support.

Labeling: Mental illness is definitely something labeled in society. Sometimes people refer to individuals with mental illness as being "mentally retarded" or "psycho." People may label these individuals as "less of a person" than a person without a mental illness. These labels go on and on, like things such as "crazy", "mad", "stupid", etc. People may also consider these individuals as a danger to society if they are not medicated, hospitalized, or are in public without proper supervision.
