DIY Self Watering Ideas for the Garden!

Excess black water from septic tank goes into "self-watering container"-style leach field, where green manure mulching crops such as comfrey are grown. Green manure mulching crops are then cut down and distributed all over the garden as fertilizer. Leach field is designed large enough to accommodate as much liquid as will build up in the leach field over winter, when plants don't consume as much water as in summer.

How to Make a Self Watering Container

Make a self-watering planter: Cut bottom off empty plastic bottle. Poke a hole in the bottle cap using wooden skewer. Fill with water, making sure you get a slow drip of water through the hole with skewer in it. Put in your flower or vegetable planter, making sure skewer is in the dirt to hold the bottle. Great for hanging planters to keep them watered! Refill with rain water or hose as needed.
