A rare portrait of Mary I as queen. She was the only child born of the ill-fated marriage of Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon who survived to adulthood. Born 18 February 1516 – 17 November 1558. She was was Queen of England and Ireland from July 1553 until her death. Her brutal persecution of Protestants caused her opponents to give her the sobriquet "Bloody Mary".

Phillip II returned to England from March to July 1557 to persuade Mary to support Spain in a new war against France. Mary's councillors advised against it as it contravened the marriage treaty. A war with France would also jeopardise French trade. The bad economic legacy from Edward VI's reign and a series of poor harvests meant England lacked supplies and finances to wage a war. War was only declared when Thomas Stafford invaded England from France in June 1556.

Thomas Lord Scrope (c.1567-1609) and his Mother Margaret Howard (1543-1591), Cousins to Queen Anne Boleyn and Queen Kathryn Howard. Margaret Howard was the daughter of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, the executed first cousin of both Anne Boleyn and Kathryn Howard, and granddaughter of Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, maternal uncle of Anne Boleyn.
