Japanese orphans whose parents were killed, or who were abandoned during the Battle of Okinawa (codename: Operation Iceberg), are photographed eating their meager rations in Koza Orphanage. Approximately 100,000 to 150,000 Okinawan men, woman, and children lost their lives during the nearly three months of fighting. Koza Orphanage housed around 3,000 to 4,000 children directly after hostilities ended. Sumiyoshi, Okinawa, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. June 1945.
