Probably made in Venice, this ivory panel was carved in a Byzantine style. Byzantine craftsmen were much in demand in Italy. The panel shows Christ with a hand raised, the other hand holding a staff. Behind him a bearded apostle and before him Mary and Martha, kneeling with hands extended in supplication. In a small shrine with cupola stands the swathed body of Lazarus. Venice (?), 9th century AD or earlier. Octobre 4, 2012, Canon 7D.
