Part of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, from the papyrus of Hunefer (c.1275 BC) showing the scribe's heart being weighed on the scale of Maat against the feather of truth, by the jackal-headed Anubis. If his heart weighs exactly the same as the feather, Hunefer is allowed to pass into the afterlife. If not he is eaten by the devouring creature Ammit composed of the deadly lion, crocodile & hippopotamus.

The Rosetta Stone has the same inscription written in three languages; Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic, and Greek. Its discovery in 1799 was key to figuring out the hieroglyphic writing system, thus allowing modern historians to unlock the contents of many manuscripts and carvings that were previously unknown. Wall painting from the tomb of Tutankhamun showing Aye carrying out the 'opening of the mouth' ceremony. This ceremony was normally carried out by the deceased Pharaoh's son but the painting seems to depict that Aye intended to be Pharaoh after Tutankhamun untimely death leaving no sons as heirs.
