The tradition of Maslenitsa (rus. Мaсленица) dates back to pagan times. It marked the welcoming of spring, and was all about the enlivening of nature and bounty of sunny warmth. The name of the holiday, Maslenitsa owes its existence to the tradition of baking pancakes (rus. Блины). Hot, round, and golden, pancakes, as people believed, represented a little of the sun’s grace and might, helping to warm up the frozen earth.

The traditional #Russian festival of масленица [maslenitsa]. How to celebrate? First, we bake lots of блины (pancakes). Although the word блин is typically translated as “pancake”, it looks more like the French crepe. A very tasteful festival, #yamee!
