Tsonev Glagolitic comparison. As a Bulgarian writing, Glagolitic appeared first in the Balkans with the Byzantine cultural influence. In ancient times, as today, there were Balkan Slavs, or Bulgarians near Solun, Kostur, Debar and other southern regions neigbouring Greek population. Naturally with such closeness to the Greek element, Bulgarians would borrow the Greek alphabet itself to express with it Slavic speech, as it occurs today in Bulgarian regions under Greek rule.
