Vyborg, Russia, now..... was Viipuri, Finland, when my parents were born (1908 and 1909) and until 1940 when Russia took over during the Winter War. Finland rallied and got it back for 3 years and lost it again, permanently in 1944. My parents described it to us in great detail... I just wish that I had listened more attentively :(.... kp

The city of Viipuri (called Vyborg by the Soviets). It was the second largest city in Finland, until it was ceded to the USSR in 1940. This photo was taken on 30 August 1941, after its liberation. The city would fall again to the Soviet Union after the Red Army's 1944 Karelian Offensive. It is now part of the Russian Federation.
