Creating A Reader's Workshop Schedule
To create a Reading Workshop schedule for 5th graders, start by allocating the 55-minute class period into designated segments according to your district's format. Your segments might include a flashback, a mini-lesson, guided practice, and an exit slip. Lastly, carve out time for small group sessions or individual reading workshops to cater to the diverse skill levels in your class.

Celebrating Banned Books In The Classroom
Discussing the belief statement "Words Have Power" is a great way to engage with Banned Books Week. It offers an opportunity to explore why some books are considered so impactful that they're restricted. Reading an article about censorship and practicing summary skills ties in nicely. This week can be a fun way to diversify your students' reading lists, aligning with your class goal of reading 40 books. It's a win-win for learning and expanding horizons!

Winter Lesson Plan: All About Penguins and Polar Bears. We’ve started doing research this week, as well as some ideas for learning about penguins, polar bears, the arctic, tundra, and all things cold. Throughout the week, we read many awesome books together during snack and stole small moments to read with friends (for morning work, at the very end of the day, and as a choice during Read to Self/Partner).
the goal setting for at - home reading is an easy and fun way to practice reading skills
1st Grade Reading Logs: Goal Setting For At-Home Reading
The best way for students to grow as readers is to spend more time reading and listening to reading. As teachers we know how important reading at home is. If our students read 20 minutes every evening, our classrooms would be SO different. Students need practice to become better readers and they need to hear fluent reading.

How To Make Predictions: 1st Grade Read Aloud
Making predictions is a just-right reading strategy for my emerging readers. Many of my friends still rely heavily on picture clues to make meaning and to decode texts. Making predictions allows readers to feel successful even with books they may not be ready to independently read, yet.

Classroom Book Recommendations In Action
Motivating students to become wild readers is always one of my top priorities each school year. From ridiculously engaging read-aloud voices to weekly themed shelves, I am willing to pull out all the stops because growing readers matters. One of the easiest ways to achieve student book buy-in is peer pressure! Getting students to suggest books to other students immediately validates the recommendation.

Today I’m joining with Primary Chalkboard to share three trade (picture) books I love reading with my kids during class (to help facilitate a lesson) or as a just-for-fun read-aloud after lunch. So tell me, what’s your favorite children’s book to share with your kids?

Tips To Create A Reader's Workshop Schedule That Works For You
Today I’m sharing with you the Reading Workshop schedule that worked for me and my group of 5th graders. This year I taught 3 reading classes, each with 30 students. The first class of the day I co-taught with an amazing Special Education Teacher. With that said, I had 55 minute class periods (including a transition time), so most days it turned into 52ish minutes. Our District has a very specific format or “blueprint” for classes that I was expected to follow daily.

How To Use Wordless Picture Books In Your Classroom
In Kindergarten and 1st grade, wordless picture books launch Writers Workshop. We focus on the idea that authors use illustrations to tell a story and we, as readers, can using storytelling words to help us step page-to-page.

How To Organize A Banned Book Week
One of our class belief statements is “Words Have Power.” This week will be a fantastic way to discuss this statement in relation to banned books. With our goal of reading 40 books, I want to expose my kiddos to all kinds of different books, especially books they might not normally pick up. Banned Book Week happens to be another way to promote some awesome books and add a little more excitement to my kids’ reading routines!

How To Find Non-Fiction Articles For Your Students - Tips for Middle Grades
We are a curriculum-free school for reading and writing, so in August I walked into a resource-empty classroom. It has taken me months to find my ‘go-to’ websites, apps, and databases that are rigorous enough (i.e. long enough, with a 800-1000 Lexile Level) and interesting for my students. Without further ado, here are my 3 favorite websites for finding nonfiction articles that are (1) appropriate (2) rigorous and (3) interesting.
