I like how the simplicity of how light is represented by the pen but is also complex when it comes to shading. I love how there is a variety of different hatching and line weights to perfectly mimic a shadow that is cast by a particular structure.

Line weight shows the depth of the structure. The boat appears close while the wall in the background appears far away, due to a dark outline and light outline respectively.

I just realized that Grandma Marilyn had her own version of a junk journal/ art journal/ smashbook, decades before they became a trend! She had little notebooks similar to this, in which she doodled and glued magazine clippings with artsy stuff.
