"There was a Russian futurist movement too, also linked to cubism and abstractionism. The painter Malevich attempted to reduce reality to its simplest, geometrical forms -- a red cross, a black square -- as part of a theory he called suprematism. He believed that music could become geometric like painting, that one could build "cylindrical sounds" and "musical cubes" on the ruins of the old forms. Such a system would be what Malevich called "the music of interference".'
