A PALMYRENE RELIEF WITH THE HEAD OF A YOUTH   Circa Mid 2nd Century A.D.   From a funerary relief, the deceased depicted wearing a mantle over his left shoulder, the fleshy face with wide, flat features framed by the large ears, with long wavy locks of hair brushed back, the sharply incised brows arching above large lidded eyes, the irises and pupils deeply incised, the small mouth with thin pursed lips, the filtrum indicated  11 in. (27.9 cm) high

Stele from Palmyria in the Roman province of Syria, about 200 CE  The Aramaic inscription is, "Alas, Umm'abi, daughter of Maggi, son of Male, son of La'ad". The linear style of carving and the clothing and jewelry reflect local fashions. The sculpture was once painted: the jewely shows traces of red, blue, green, and yellow pigment.
