Archaeological finds date back to the Neolithic, and it was first documented in the early second millennium BC as a caravan stop for travellers crossing the Syrian Desert.

Built by King Nebuchadnezzar II and named after Babylon’s favourite Goddess, The Ishtar Gate was one of the great architectural achievements of ancient times. One of the City of Babylon’s eight gates, it was uncovered in the early twentieth century and reconstructed here in Berlin.
